January 2006
The new light poles are due early February and will be installed, weather permitting, as soon as Steinbach Construction can mobilize. What a grand difference this project will make for our Downtown and the entire community. How fantastic that the 49 Degrees North and Chewelah Peak Learning Center traffic pass right through our business district!
City Council approved the Chewelah Crest Phase One development at their January meeting. City concerns on this phase have focused on providing adequate water for fire flow. These were accommodated with a design that will include an additional reservoir at the top of the hill. This development will provide spectacular views for residents and sightseers.
City Administrator Jon Lind and Water Superintendent Robin Hegney met with representatives from Washington Department of Health last week to discuss water conservation. Current efforts have included system leak detection and correction. Several major leaks were recently detected and corrected. If anyone suspects a water leak, please contact us for analysis and repair.
I will present the Council a Resolution to apply for WSDOT grant funds for preparation of an FAA approved Airport Layout Plan. The granted funds will be a 5% match requirement. The ALP is necessary to qualify for future grants at the Airport.
I request council approval to transfer the Garbage fund surplus to a capital reserve account to be used for new equipment as necessary.
We located a very good condition utility line truck in Chehalis. I request council approval to transfer the 2006 Electric beginning fund balance to the Capital project fund and furthermore approve a maximum of $33,000 for the purpose of buying this vehicle. This has been discussed several times in recent years because of the aged condition of our current line truck. It was generally agreed that a new truck costing around $200,000 was too much to pay and a good used vehicle would be the best course of action.
The WRIA 59 Draft Detailed Implementation Plan will be available for viewing by the public soon. Copies will be located in City and the Chewelah Library.
Department of Ecology clarified that open burning is permissible by permit thru December 31, 2006. Citizens wishing to burn may apply for a burn permit at City Hall.
